Getting
Rid of Ritalin: How Neurofeedback Can Successfully Treat Attention
Deficit Disorder Without Drugs
by Robert W. Hill, Eduardo Castro
Review by George von Hilsheimer, Ph.D., F.R.S.H. from Maitland,
FL:
"Any professional who works with ADD and ADHD kids will be happy
to read GETTING RID OF RITALIN. Dr. Robert W. Hill not only knows
what he is typing about, but he crafts his words with energy and directness.
Bob is readable! His thesis is that Ritalin and other addictive and
dangerous drugs are not needed to help ADD children, even when the
kids are wildly hyperactive. What IS needed is succinctly explained
in simple, practical words: EEG biofeedback (aka Neurofeedback); dietary
management; avoidance of certain chemicals; allergy treatment and
other medical advise buttressed by Physician Castro's medical expertise;
and behavioral modification. The book is supported by an extensive
bibliography; a practitioner list is given along with diets and other
detailed information."

A
Symphony in the Brain: The Evolution of the New Brain Wave Biofeedback
by Jim Robbins (Paperback)
Description: Imagine a procedure versatile enough
to treat epilepsy, autism, attention deficit disorder, addictions,
and depression with no drugs or side effects; to bring patients out
of vegetative states; and to improve everything from golf scores to
opera singers' voices. These are only some of the claims made for
neurofeedback, a controversial but effective treatment that is revolutionizing
the way an incredibly diverse range of medical and psychological conditions
are treated. In A Symphony in the Brain, Jim Robbins traces the fascinating,
untold story of the development of neurofeedback, from its discovery
by a small corps of research psychologists, to its growing application
across the country and around the world, to present battles for acceptance
in the conservative medical world. Offering a wealth of powerful case
studies, accessible scientific explanations, and dramatic personal
accounts, Robbins journeys through a remarkable field, which he brings
to the public eye for the first time.

Disorders in the Everyday Lives of Children, Adolescents and Adults
by Daniel G. Amen, MD. /Paperback / Published 1997
Reader Review: This should be a must read for every
parent of an Adder or an Adult Adder. Dr. Amen has treated thousands

walked it so he can truly talk about it. I have two ADHD children

after being diagnosed. He covers the MANY angles of how ADD effects
ones life and how to deal with it. The most technical part, understanding

Healing
ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the
Six Types of ADD
by Daniel Amen M.D., Daniel G. Amen; Hardcover
Description: Commonly perceived as a flavor-of-the-month
diagnosis, ADD is, in fact, an enormous health problem that will
only continue to grow. It affects six percent of the population,
yet less than one third are taking medication. Why? According to
Dr. Amen, attention deficit disorder is underdiagnosed, often incorrectly
treated, and poorly understood. Dr. Amen, board-certified in child,
adolescent, and adult psychiatry and licensed in nuclear brain imaging,
has discovered that there are six types of ADD- not just the commonly
known two. Moreover, the most frequently prescribed treatment- Ritalin-
makes four of these types worse. Dr. Amen's discovery results from
an intensive, years-long study of brain imaging that has identified
the distinctive brain dysfunctions characterizing each type of ADD.
Dr. Amen's arresting brain images found throughout these pages leave
no doubt that ADD is a real, biological, and ultimately treatable
disorder. These dramatic images help sufferers and their families
realize this is a medical problem that can be helped with proper
intervention. Until now the psychiatric community has not done enough
for people with ADD. The disorder does not disappear after adolescence,
and it is much more complex than we have been led to believe. ADD
sufferers often say, "The harder I try, the worse it gets".
Dr. Amen tells them, for the first time, how to get well. |

Healing
the Hardware of the Soul : How Making the Brain-Soul Connection Can
Optimize Your Life, Love, and Spiritual Growth
by Daniel G. Amen; Hardcover
Review by Amazon.com: As the title suggests, Healing
the Hardware of the Soul is a unique blend of advanced scientific
technique and fundamental religious principles. Dr. Daniel Amen, a
graduate of Oral Roberts University, isn't promoting a strictly Christian
agenda, but he makes it repeatedly clear that one of the crucial steps
in achieving mental health is prayer. Depending on your beliefs, this
insistence can range from pleasing to offensive. His work is centered
around the physical aspects of the brain--in some ways, it resembles
a modern form of phrenology. Using detailed imaging technology, he
has established connections between specific behaviors--panic disorders,
depression, ADD--and over- or underactive areas of the brain. As with
most new forms of medical research, his work is both lauded and ridiculed,
and only further research will determine its ultimate validity. For
people anxious to put his findings to use, there are several chapters
devoted to questionnaires that can be used in place of brain scans.
Exercises and suggestions follow, and stay surprisingly simple--forming
personal connections, seeking appropriate medical care and medications,
and creating short-term, specific goals are a few old standbys. Regardless
of what methods Amen is using to arrive at the solutions, it's clear
he finds plenty of value in tried-and-true solutions.

Attention
Deficit Disorder in Adults
by Lynn Weiss, Kenneth A. Bonnet Ph. D. /Paperback / Published 1997
Editorial Review: The first book to address adult
ADD, Dr. Lynn Weiss's bestselling Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults
has sold over 125,000 copies since its publication in 1991. This updated
volume still contains all the original information--how to tell if
you have ADD, ways to master distraction, ADD's impact on the family,
and more--plus the newest treatments available.
Reader Review: This book was great for me! It was
as though the author had been living inside my brain. Some of the
issues in this particular book did not particularly pertain to me,
but most of them did. I have purchased several of these books and
given them to people who have been diagnosed adult ADD or ADHD telling
them to return it if they did not like it. If they did like it then
they could reimburse me for it. So far 6 of 6 people have sent me
a thank you note with a check for repayment. I have just ordered another
copy of this book for my fiance to have for his own referance since
this book does a much better job of explaining how I think, feel,
act etc than I can!

Attention-Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults
by Paul H. Wender / Hardcover / Published 1995
Description: Most people still think of attention-deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a psychiatric disorder affecting
only young children and adolescents. Yet Paul H. Wender has been studying,
researching and writing about adults with this disorder for more than
twenty-five years, and he is the ideal candidate to sort out the current
controversy surrounding the often undiagnosed ailment. In Attention-Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults, Wender for the first time gathers
together the important new breakthroughs he and others have made in
the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in adults.
Here, Wender emphasizes the commonalities that emerge from research
literature and winnows the factual from the sensational or overly
simplistic reports in the popular media. He points to possible relationships
between ADHD in adults and other psychiatric disorders, and discusses
the impact of the disorder which can produce marital discord, academic
failure, and disrupted careers. A clinician who has treated patients
with ADHD for many years, he offers compelling firsthand accounts
from men and women who offer dramatic insight into what it feels like
to have ADHD and how it responds to medical treatment, bringing together
a wealth of information not available in any other volume. Attention-Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults is an indispensable guide for clinicians
and family counselors, and a source of help, hope, and understanding
for adults who suspect that they or someone they care about may suffer
from this much misunderstood disorder.

The
A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. Diet! : A Comprehensive Look at Contributing Factors
and Natural Treatments for Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder
and Hyperactivity
by Rachel Bell, et al; Paperback
Reader Review: This book advises that once you have
been diagnosed with ADD by a physician, you should educate yourself
as to alternatives before starting drug treatment. I was very glad
to find that many other things mimic ADD and kids actually may not
have ADD. This book took me through a step by step procedure to eliminate
triggers that may cause symptoms. I am glad that someone finally realized
that kids (and adults too) need alternative choices to drugs. I firmly
believe that we are all different and some of us respond to drug therapy
without complications, but to put a child on drugs without first determining
if they really have the illness is criminal. If your doctor can't
tell you what is causing the ADD, then do more research. This book
will help.

The
A.D.D. Book : New Understandings, New Approaches to Parenting Your
Child
by William Sears, Lynda Thompson / Hardcover / Published 1998
Editorial Review: "Dr. Bill" Sears, author
of The Baby Book, beloved pediatrician, and creator of "attachment"
parenting, teams with Lynda Thompson, an expert on attention deficit
disorder and a proponent of neurofeedback, to provide parents with
a highly positive, helpful guide to understanding and assisting the
ADD child. Sears and Thompson carefully describe the ADD child's particular
cluster of neurological traits--some positive (creativity, spontaneity,
hyperfocus) and some potentially negative (selective attention, distractibility,
hyperactivity). They emphasize that all of these traits can, depending
upon how they are perceived and shaped, work to a child's advantage
or disadvantage. The authors provide insight into and an analysis
of accurately diagnosing the ADD child, managing problem areas, and
helping the child cope at school and at home. A thorough discussion
about the use of stimulant drugs (Dr. Bill calls them "focus
pills") describes appropriate use and misuse, and stresses that
the drugs should be used in combination with other, more holistic
therapies. Thompson's expertise in neurofeedback is presented as an
effective alternative therapy. At a time when many schools have lengthy
"Ritalin lines" in front of the nurse's office every day,
Sears and Thompson's book is a welcome relief for parents looking
for a wide scope of alternatives.

ADD
and the College Student: A Guide for High School and College Students
with Attention Deficit Disorder
by Patricia O. Quinn(Editor) / Paperback / Published 1994
Editorial Review: Useful for addressing the existence
of attention deficit disorder beyond the hyperactivity of childhood,
this reassuring book frankly covers the realities and logistics of
having ADD. It serves as a helpful guide to selecting and entering
college and to succeeding there. Various professionals (physicians,
psychologists, educators, and lawyers) and "real life" experts
(college students and parents) describe the challenge of ADD and its
impact on the college experience in short, lucid chapters. Throughout,
the underlying message is that students should recognize the limitations
that ADD presents and seek help in finding remedies for their particular
problems. Individual sections address the manifestations of ADD, cover
various treatments, outline college programs, consider learning accommodations
that students might utilize, and review ADD students' legal rights.
Good for students (still in high school or new to college), for parents
(who are coping with the angst of an adolescent as well as an ADD
student), and for high-school and college faculty and administrators
in need of some straight talk about ADD. This guidebook is practical,
realistic, optimistic, and reassuring for both teens and adults.

ADHD
: How to Deal With Very Difficult Children (Human Horizons Series)
by Alan Train / Paperback / Published 1997
Editorial Review: Why do some children find it impossible
to sit still, concentrate, complete a task or control their emotions?
The causes of the increasingly recognised condition ADHD (attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder) are a matter of debate, but the problems
that it creates can have a disastrous effect on a child's ability
to learn, socialise and lead a normal life. Alan Train draws on many
years' experience of working with emotionally fragile children to
offer solutions based on acceptance that ADHD is part of the child's
make-up. Writing for parents and teachers, he explains what the condition
is, how it is diagnosed and what they can do to help the child in
a positive and lasting way. He also looks at the needs of the adults,
recognising that they must first learn to deal with their own reactions
and emotions. The treatment he advocates is aimed at enabling the
child with ADHD to acquire techniques of self-control that will give
him or her the strength to cope and which can be developed and refined
through the years to adulthood. Drug therapy, he stresses, should
be considered as an effective complement to the measures which can
be adopted by both home and school.

The
ADD Nutrition Solution : A Drug-Free Thirty Day Plan
by Marcia Zimmerman / Paperback / Published 1999
Editorial Review: Zimmerman prefers the term attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) to attention deficit disorder
(ADD). The teacher and nutritional biochemist posits prevention
as the first priority in dealing with AD/HD, but once it is manifest,
the most effective approach is to treat causes rather than symptoms--and
Ritalin, she believes, is a symptom reliever rather than a treater.
She discusses the various causes and stresses the importance of
a carefully worked out diagnosis. Once that is reached, treatment
can proceed realistically. Proper management of the child's activities
and attitudes at home and at school is vital. Suitable foods, attractively
prepared and presented, constitute the main element in her program,
and she counsels sitting down, relaxing, and chewing at meals. Sugar
is dangerous, the widely touted olestra can be troublesome, and
even optimal regular nutrition needs supplements, so Zimmerman helpfully
details acceptable and unacceptable supplements. The informative
book is itself supplemented by lists of AD/HD-provoking additives,
sources of appropriate foods and supplements, and resources for
further information.
